born 3/14/1942 🖤 70’s&80’s
Most famous for his work as ART DiRECTOR at @shiseido, in the 1980s, Multitalented Lutens must be recognized as a true #ViSiONARY & #BEAUTYiCON.
In 1956, at 14 years old, Serge did an apprenticeship at a hair parlor, this period of his life opened his mind and world to the appreciation of beauty. In order to experiment & practice photography, Lutens often asked his friends to become his models and pose in front of the camera. Known for never compromising on his works and having a clear vision Serge took full charge of his projects by handling everything from taking photos, doing makeup & hair as well as art direction. Later, in 1962 he moved to Paris and was hired by Vogue to do fashion jewelry, hair and makeup. Throughout the 60s, he worked with photographers like #BobRichardson, #RichardAvedon & #irvingPenn
1967, he was commissioned by Christian Dior to produce a line of makeup, it was his time spent at Dior that revolutionized the Modern Day Luxury Brand. Dior can be noted as the first fashion house to introduce the selling of cosmetics and beauty products alongside clothing. Flash to 50 years later, almost every #LUXfashion house follows the same model. 🖤
1973, Lutens the #ARTiST produced a photographic series which was inspired by the works of artists, such as #GeorgesPierreSeurat, #AmedeoModigliani, #PabloPicasso & #ClaudeMonet. These photographs were displayed in New York’s Guggenheim Museum.
By the 1980’s Lutens was assigned to extend and enhance Shiseido product image. Throughout this time, he designed their packaging & makeup, created photographs, commercial films and campaigns, all incredibly inspiring and all becoming pieces of art of their own.
#FUNFACT... in the 60’s while at @voguemagazine #DianaVreeland famously proclaimed Lutens as a “revolution of makeup.”
